The function of the urinary system is to keep the amount and composition of body fluids with in the body. This system frees the body from waste that accumulates as a product of cellular metabolism. The urinary system maintains the correct fluid volume by regulating the amount of water that is excreted in the urine. Other contributions of the urinary system include regulating the concentrations of different electrolytes in the body’s fluids and maintaining regular pH of the blood. The urinary system also helps by maintaining normal blood pressure by producing renin, the enzyme that decreases salt levels or lower blood volume. The urinary system controls red blood cell production by releasing a hormone called erythropoietin.
